Upcoming 5Ks Near Lake Conroe and The Woodlands: 2026 Race Guide

The Montgomery County running calendar is starting to fill up again.

Between Conroe, Magnolia and The Woodlands, runners can choose from traditional road races, a free weekly community 5K, a muddy obstacle course, a brewery run, a veterans fundraiser and a holiday night race.

That variety matters because not everyone signs up for a 5K for the same reason.

Some runners are chasing a faster time. Others need an event on the calendar to get them off the couch. Plenty of people are perfectly happy walking three miles with friends before collecting a shirt, medal or post-race beer.

All of those reasons count.

Whether you are training for your first finish line or looking for another local event to add to your race calendar, these are the best confirmed upcoming 5Ks near Lake Conroe and The Woodlands during the second half of 2026.

Spindle Tree parkrun

When: Every Saturday at 7:30 a.m.
Where: Spindle Tree Jogging Trail, Springtime Creek Drive, Magnolia
Race type: Free, timed community 5K

Spindle Tree parkrun is the easiest place to begin because you do not have to wait for a special race weekend.

The volunteer-led event takes place every Saturday morning on the Spindle Tree Jogging Trail. Participants can run, jog, walk, volunteer or simply come out to watch. Registration is free, although first-time participants should register with parkrun before arriving and bring their scannable participant barcode.

This is an especially good option for runners who want to test their current fitness before paying for a larger race.

You can use it as:

  • Your first organized 5K
  • A weekly training run
  • A timed fitness check
  • A family walk
  • Practice for pacing and race mornings
  • A low-pressure return after time away from running

Because it happens every week, missing one Saturday does not destroy your entire training plan. You just try again seven days later.

Thunderfoot take

Best for beginners and consistency.

Spindle Tree parkrun removes nearly every excuse. It is nearby, free and open to walkers as well as runners. For someone who keeps saying, “I want to run a 5K someday,” this is the someday.

Terrain Race Houston

When: Saturday, August 1, 2026
Where: Three Palms Action Sports Park, 15100 Interstate 45 South, Conroe
Race type: Approximately three-mile obstacle and mud race

Terrain Race is not your normal neighborhood 5K.

Instead of simply covering 3.1 miles, participants work through mud, ropes, walls, monkey bars and other obstacles built around the property at Three Palms Action Sports Park. Entrants select a starting wave, making it easier for friends or family members to tackle the course together.

This race favors teamwork and persistence more than perfect pacing.

A fast road runner may discover that upper-body strength matters when the course reaches the climbing obstacles. Meanwhile, someone who is not normally competitive in a traditional 5K may have a blast crawling through mud and helping friends over walls.

Wear clothing and shoes you are willing to abuse. This is not the morning to break out spotless white running shoes unless you are emotionally prepared to say goodbye to them.

Who should enter?

Terrain Race is a strong choice for:

  • Friend groups
  • Gym members
  • Families with older children
  • Runners bored with regular road races
  • Anyone who prefers adventure over personal records

Thunderfoot take

Best for groups and people who think normal running needs more mud.

Do not enter expecting a fast 5K time. Enter because jumping, climbing and crawling through a course in Conroe sounds more entertaining than running another loop around the neighborhood.

Heatwave 5K

When: Sunday, August 2, 2026, at 7:00 a.m.
Where: Town Green Park, 2099 Lake Robbins Drive, The Woodlands
Race type: Chip-timed road 5K

The Heatwave event includes a kids dash, one-mile race, 5K, 10K, half marathon and half-marathon relay, but the 5K is the most approachable option for most local runners.

The race begins at Town Green Park and includes chip timing, live results, age-group awards, a race shirt, finisher medal, free event photos and a frozen treat at the finish. Organizers currently list packet pickup from 5:30 to 6:45 a.m., followed by the main race start at 7:00 a.m. (RunSignup)

The obvious challenge is right there in the name.

August running in Southeast Texas is hot and humid, even early in the morning. This is not the race to start 90 seconds per mile faster than your training pace because the opening stretch feels easy.

Run smart, begin under control and save enough energy for the final mile.

Thunderfoot take

Best for runners who want a traditional race experience.

The Heatwave 5K offers timing, awards, race swag and multiple distances for families or groups with different goals. One person can run the 5K while another takes on the 10K or half marathon.

The 11 Below 5K Beer Run at B-52 Brewing

When: Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 8:00 a.m.
Where: B-52 Brewing, 12470 Milroy Lane, Conroe
Race type: Brewery road 5K

This race comes with an important venue update.

It was originally promoted as the Southern Star Brewing Company 5K, but Southern Star closed at the end of June. The event has moved to B-52 Brewing and is now being presented as the 11 Below 5K Beer Run.

The race starts and finishes at B-52 Brewing and follows a route through the Sunset Ridge neighborhood. The event supports Marines Toys for Tots, which is also scheduled to operate the water station near the midpoint of the course.

After the race, eligible adult participants receive a finisher glass and beer tastings from 11 Below or B-52. The event also advertises food, music, brewery activities and a course that accommodates strollers and leashed dogs. Non-alcohol and minor registration options are available.

Packet pickup is scheduled at B-52 Brewing on Friday, August 7, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., with race-morning pickup available from 6:30 to 7:45 a.m.

Thunderfoot take

Best overall Thunderfoot-style 5K.

Running, a local brewery, food, music and a charitable connection? That checks several boxes.

Just remember that the beer comes after the race. Showing up dehydrated because the finish line includes tastings is a spectacularly bad race strategy.

Memorial Hermann 10 for Texas: Armadillo Run 5K

When: Saturday, October 10, 2026
Where: Northshore Park, The Woodlands
Race type: Chip-timed community 5K

The annual Memorial Hermann 10 for Texas weekend includes the main 10-mile race, the 3.1 Armadillo Run 5K and the One 4 Texas Kids’ Fun Run.

The Woodlands Township produces the races, which begin at Northshore Park and finish with a large post-race celebration featuring live music. The 5K is chip timed and recommended for participants age 10 and older. Organizers also state that entries are capped and that race-day registration will not be available. (The Woodlands Parks)

This is one of the better local events for someone who enjoys the atmosphere of a larger race without committing to 10 miles.

It also works well for families. Adults and older children can enter the 5K while younger runners participate in the one-mile event.

Runners should note that the posted course rules require maintaining a pace of 16 minutes per mile to stay ahead of the scheduled road reopening. Strollers and animals are not allowed on the race course.

Thunderfoot take

Best for a polished community race experience.

October usually feels like the beginning of real running season around here—even when Texas weather occasionally forgets to cooperate.

This is a strong target race for anyone beginning an eight- to twelve-week training plan during the summer.

Mighty Oaks Veterans Day 5K

When: Saturday, November 7, 2026, at 8:00 a.m.
Where: Conroe
Race type: Fundraising 5K and 10K

The Mighty Oaks Veterans Day Run gives participants a choice between a 5K and 10K, with both distances scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m.

The event supports awareness of veteran suicide and the work of the Mighty Oaks Foundation. The current registration page lists a $22 race fee plus the registration service charge, with registration scheduled to close on November 6.

This is the race for runners who want their entry fee and race morning to connect to something larger than a finishing time.

Competitive runners can still chase a goal, but the atmosphere and mission make it equally suitable for walkers, first-time participants, veterans, military families and community teams.

Consider forming a group through your workplace, neighborhood, gym or veterans organization. Cause-based races tend to be more meaningful when the starting line is filled with people who know why they are there.

Thunderfoot take

Best race for supporting a local cause.

Some races are about medals. Others stick with you because of the people, stories and mission surrounding the course. This one belongs in the second category.

Glow and Go 5K

When: Saturday, December 5, 2026, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: The Woodlands Waterway
Race type: Chip-timed nighttime 5K

Glow and Go closes the local 2026 calendar with a nighttime run through The Woodlands Waterway.

The race is produced by The Woodlands Township Parks and Recreation Department and is sanctioned by USA Track and Field. The current event listing shows a 6:00 p.m. start, a $35 entry fee and eligibility beginning at age 10. Awards are planned for overall and age-group finishers.

A December evening race feels completely different from an August morning event.

Instead of trying to survive direct sunlight and heavy humidity, runners get holiday lights, cooler conditions and an evening atmosphere that works well for friends and families.

Wear something visible, arrive early enough to deal with holiday traffic and bring a dry layer for after the race. Even a mild Texas evening can feel chilly once you stop running in sweaty clothes.

Thunderfoot take

Best for holiday atmosphere and families.

This is a good season-ending goal for runners who begin training in September or October. It is also far more productive than spending the entire first weekend of December arguing with tangled Christmas lights.

One race to watch: Texas 10 Conroe 5K

The Texas 10 Conroe traditionally includes 10-mile, five-mile and 5K distances at Lone Star College’s Conroe Center.

The organizer’s currently accessible registration page still displays the December 7, 2025 event rather than a confirmed 2026 date. The course has historically been promoted as a fast northern Montgomery County route, with shirts and finisher medals for all three distances.

Because a verified 2026 date is not yet posted on that registration page, treat this as a watch-list race, not a confirmed calendar entry.

It could become another strong December option once organizers release updated information.

Which local 5K should you choose?

Choose Spindle Tree parkrun when you want free weekly accountability.

Choose Terrain Race when your group wants obstacles, mud and a story worth telling afterward.

Choose the Heatwave 5K when you want a conventional timed event with a medal and age-group competition.

Choose the 11 Below Beer Run when the post-race experience matters almost as much as the race.

Choose the Armadillo Run 5K when you want a larger, well-organized community event.

Choose the Mighty Oaks Veterans Day 5K when you want to run for a meaningful cause.

Choose Glow and Go when you want a fun nighttime finish to the year.

There is no wrong choice here. The best 5K is usually the one that gets you training consistently enough to reach the starting line.

A simple four-week beginner plan

Someone who can already walk for 30 to 45 minutes can prepare for a 5K without turning every workout into misery.

Week 1

Complete three sessions alternating two minutes of brisk walking with one minute of easy jogging for approximately 30 minutes.

Week 2

Alternate two minutes of walking with two minutes of jogging. Keep the pace slow enough to hold a conversation.

Week 3

Alternate one minute of walking with three minutes of jogging. Complete one slightly longer weekend session.

Week 4

Run or walk easily twice early in the week, rest the day before the event and complete the race using the same controlled intervals.

Walking during a 5K is not failure. Going out too fast, overheating and spending the final mile reconsidering every decision that led you there is not particularly heroic either.

Texas summer race-day essentials

For the August races, prepare your gear the night before:

  • Lightweight running clothes
  • Comfortable shoes already used in training
  • Dry shirt for after the race
  • Hat or visor
  • Sunscreen
  • Water and electrolytes
  • Small towel
  • Identification and registration information
  • Plastic bag for muddy Terrain Race gear
  • Designated driver when attending the brewery run

Arrive hydrated, begin at a controlled pace and pay attention to how you feel. A summer 5K is not the day to ignore warning signs just because your watch says you are close to a personal record.

Final whistle

You do not have to travel into downtown Houston to find an interesting race.

Montgomery County’s upcoming calendar includes free community running, traditional road racing, obstacle competition, brewery fun, veterans support and holiday events. There are options for serious runners, complete beginners, walkers, families and groups looking for a different kind of Saturday morning.

Pick an event. Put it on the calendar. Tell someone you are doing it.

Then start training before your future self realizes what you have signed up for.

Life is better outside—and sometimes it comes with a bib number.

Race to watch

Texas 10 Conroe 5K
Organizer’s RunSignup page

The page still shows the December 7, 2025 race, so a 2026 date is not yet confirmed. It should remain a watch-list event rather than being presented as an officially scheduled 2026 race.

Race schedules, venues, prices and registration policies can change. Confirm the latest details with the event organizer before registering or traveling.
