By Thunderfoot Sports Running & Fitness Desk
There is a very specific moment every Texas runner waits for.
You step outside before sunrise.
You don’t immediately regret everything.
Congratulations. Fall running season has arrived.
Sort of.
October is one of the best months on the Texas running calendar because almost every kind of runner can find something worth circling. There are fast road races, destination weekends, half marathons, rugged Hill Country trail races and enough Halloween-themed 5Ks to justify owning running shorts that somehow incorporate a cape.
The Thunderfoot Sports Texas Race Finder lets runners search verified races by date, location and race type, so consider this article the October shortlist rather than the entire calendar.
Here are some of the October 2026 Texas races we’d put near the top of the list.
Quick Take: Our October Picks
Best Race + Weekend: Oktoberfest Kraut Run — Fredericksburg
Best North Houston Race: Memorial Hermann 10 for Texas — The Woodlands
Best Houston-Area Half: Sugar Land Half Marathon
Best Houston Fall Half: UTHealth Houston Half Marathon & 10K
Best Gulf Coast Adventure: Galveston Ultra Trail
Best Hill Country Trail Race: Inks Lake Trail Run/Ruck
Best Rugged Trail Challenge: South Texas Ultra
Best North Texas Multi-Distance Race: Caveman Challenge
Best Family Halloween Race: Spooky Sprint — New Braunfels
Best Houston Halloween Run: Monster Mash
Best Halloween Trail Run: Chupacabra Trail Run — Waco
And then there is the Laredo race where you get to run on an airport runway.
October is doing just fine.
October 3: Start the Month With a Road Trip
October wastes absolutely no time.
You can kick off the month with a Hill Country Oktoberfest weekend or head all the way south for one of the more unusual 5Ks in Texas.
Oktoberfest Kraut Run 5K & 8K — Fredericksburg
Date: Saturday, October 3, 2026
Location: Fredericksburg
Distances: 5K run, untimed 5K walk and 8K run
Thunderfoot Pick: Best race-and-festival weekend
This is exactly the kind of event we want more of at Thunderfoot.
You’re not simply driving somewhere, running a 5K and turning around.
The Oktoberfest Kraut Run takes place the same morning as Fredericksburg Oktoberfest. The race begins near the Fredericksburg Administration Building, with the event scheduled for the morning of October 3.
That’s a pretty easy weekend formula.
Run in the morning.
Clean yourself up.
Find German food.
Proceed accordingly.
Why We’d Run It
Fredericksburg already works as a Texas weekend destination. Adding a race gives you an excuse to make the trip active instead of simply spending two days moving between restaurants.
And the 5K/8K setup works for recreational runners who want something more interesting than another neighborhood race without committing to a half marathon.
Thunderfoot Take
This is probably our best overall October race weekend.
If you’re already considering Fredericksburg Oktoberfest, bring the running shoes.
Race first.
Pretzel later.
We don’t make the rules.
Runway Run 5K — Laredo
Date: Saturday, October 3, 2026
Location: Laredo International Airport
Distances: 5K and 1-mile walk
Thunderfoot Pick: Most unusual October 5K
There are plenty of 5Ks where you run around a park.
There are considerably fewer where you run down an airport runway.
The City of Laredo’s 6th Annual Runway Run is scheduled for October 3 at Laredo International Airport and includes a 5K, 1-mile walk and Adaptive Athlete Division.
Why We’d Run It
Because it’s an airport runway.
That’s pretty much the pitch.
For runners in South Texas—or anyone willing to build a Laredo weekend around something different—this is exactly the kind of event that becomes more memorable than your finishing time.
Thunderfoot Take
Not every race needs to be a PR attempt.
Sometimes you run because the course is cool.
This qualifies.
October 10: One of the Biggest Race Saturdays of the Month
If you’re looking at October 10, Texas gives you a very different decision depending on which direction you drive.
You can run a polished community road race in The Woodlands or go considerably farther down the endurance rabbit hole in North Texas.
Memorial Hermann 10 for Texas — The Woodlands
Date: Saturday, October 10, 2026
Location: Northshore Park, The Woodlands
Distances: 10-mile, 5K and kids’ 1-mile fun run
Thunderfoot Pick: Best North Houston race
For Houston-area runners, this is one of the easiest races on the October calendar to recommend.
The Memorial Hermann 10 for Texas includes a USATF-sanctioned certified 10-mile course, the 3.1 Armadillo Run 5K and the One 4 Texas Kids’ Fun Run. The event starts at Northshore Park and finishes with a post-race party.
Why We’d Run It
Ten miles is an underrated race distance.
It’s long enough that you need to train for it.
It’s short enough that your entire Sunday doesn’t become a negotiation with your legs.
The accompanying 5K and kids’ run also make this a good choice for families where everybody isn’t training for the same distance.
Thunderfoot Take
If you live around The Woodlands, Conroe, Spring, Montgomery or North Houston, start here when you’re looking for a serious October race without turning it into a travel weekend.
Caveman Challenge at Waterloo Lake — Denison
Date: Saturday, October 10, 2026
Location: Waterloo Lake Park, Denison
Distances: 1.5-mile fun run, 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon and 50K
Thunderfoot Pick: Best choose-your-own-adventure race
The Caveman Challenge at Waterloo Lake covers almost every distance somebody might reasonably request from one event.
The 2026 race offers a 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon and 50K along with a shorter fun run at Waterloo Lake Park in Denison.
Why We’d Run It
This is useful for groups where everybody is at a different point in their training.
Someone can race a 5K.
Someone else can run the half.
And then there’s your friend who apparently decided 50 kilometers sounded relaxing.
We all have one.
Thunderfoot Take
A strong North Texas option if you’d rather have trails and endurance options than a conventional city road race.
October 11: Sugar Land Goes Long
Sugar Land Half Marathon, 10K & Mile
Date: Sunday, October 11, 2026
Location: Smart Financial Centre, Sugar Land
Distances: Half marathon, 10K and mile
Thunderfoot Pick: Best Houston-area race for moving up in distance
The Sugar Land Half Marathon returns October 11 with its half marathon, 10K and mile events based around Smart Financial Centre. The organizers say both primary distances use loop courses for 2026, with course changes intended to improve flow and parking access.
Why We’d Run It
This is a good progression race.
Maybe you’ve spent the summer running 5Ks.
Maybe you’ve worked up to six or seven miles.
October arrives and you finally want to find out what happens when you keep going.
The 10K gives intermediate runners a solid goal while the half gives more experienced recreational runners something substantial to train toward.
Thunderfoot Take
If a Houston-area runner asked us:
“Which October race should I train for if I want something bigger than a 5K?”
This would be very high on the list.
October 17: Texas Trail Runners Take Over
Road runners get plenty of choices during October.
Trail runners might have even more fun.
October 17 gives you several very different opportunities to leave pavement behind.
Galveston Ultra Trail — Galveston
Date: Saturday, October 17, 2026
Location: Galveston / East Beach
Distances: 1 mile through 50K, including 5K, 10K, half marathon, relay and ruck options
Thunderfoot Pick: Best Gulf Coast adventure race
This one is particularly interesting because 2026 is the debut year.
Trail Racing Over Texas is bringing the Galveston Ultra Trail to the island on October 17, including a point-to-point shoreline 50K and shorter events centered around East Beach. The event includes running, walking, relay and ruck options.
Why We’d Run It
Because trail running does not always have to mean rocks, cedar trees and elevation.
Running along the Gulf Coast creates an entirely different challenge.
Sand.
Wind.
Sun.
Potentially some extremely judgmental seagulls.
Thunderfoot Take
This is one we’d consider turning into a full Galveston weekend.
Race Saturday.
Recover somewhere near the water.
Eat something you absolutely did not earn according to your watch but are going to eat anyway.
Inks Lake Trail Run/Ruck — Burnet
Date: Saturday, October 17, 2026
Location: Inks Lake area, Burnet
Distances: 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, 50K and youth trail run, with ruck options
Thunderfoot Pick: Best Hill Country trail weekend
The Inks Lake Trail Run/Ruck is scheduled for October 17 near Burnet and offers distances from a youth trail run and 5K through the 50K.
Why We’d Run It
This is the kind of race where the location is part of the reason to register.
Instead of chasing a road PR, you’re building a Hill Country weekend around trails, scenery and being outside.
Which is considerably more our speed.
Thunderfoot Take
If you’re curious about trail running but not ready to jump straight into ultra territory, the shorter distances make this a good entry point.
The 50K will still be there when you lose your mind later.
South Texas Ultra — Leakey
Date: Saturday, October 17, 2026
Location: H.W. Lewis Ranch, Leakey
Distances: 5K, 17K, 35K and 50K, plus 17K ruck
Thunderfoot Pick: Best rugged Hill Country challenge
Then there is the other end of the spectrum.
The South Texas Ultra uses rugged rocky, dirt and grass trails around H.W. Lewis Ranch near Leakey, with a 2026 lineup ranging from 5K through 50K.
Why We’d Run It
This isn’t a “maybe I’ll see whether trail running is my thing” event at the longer distances.
This is where you go when trail running is already very much your thing.
Thunderfoot Take
For runners looking for an October challenge rather than simply an October race, Leakey deserves a look.
And yes, there is a 5K.
So technically you can bring your sane friends.
October 25: Houston Half-Marathon Season Arrives
UTHealth Houston Half Marathon & 10K
Date: Sunday, October 25, 2026
Location: Sam Houston Park, Houston
Distances: Half marathon and 10K
Thunderfoot Pick: Best Houston fall road race
The UTHealth Houston Half Marathon & 10K is scheduled for October 25, with the half starting at 7 a.m. and the 10K following at 7:45 a.m. The event is hosted by the Houston Striders and starts around Sam Houston Park.
Why We’d Run It
Late October is when Houston distance running finally starts feeling like distance-running season again.
Hopefully.
Texas weather reserves the right to completely ignore that sentence.
The half gives runners a substantial fall target while the 10K works for people who want the downtown race atmosphere without spending 13.1 miles contemplating their choices.
Thunderfoot Take
This is probably the marquee Houston-area road race of October for half-marathon runners.
It also lands at a useful point for anyone building toward longer winter races.
Spooky Sprint — New Braunfels
Date: Sunday, October 25, 2026
Location: Fischer Park, New Braunfels
Distances: Kids dash, 1 mile, 5K, 10K and half marathon
Thunderfoot Pick: Best family Halloween race
If you want Halloween without waiting until Halloween morning, Spooky Sprint brings costumes and running together in New Braunfels.
The October 25 event offers multiple distances from the kids’ dash through the half marathon and is designed as a family-friendly Halloween-themed race.
Why We’d Run It
This is much more accessible for families than an event where the only options are “half marathon” and “regret.”
Kids can participate.
Newer runners can choose the mile or 5K.
More experienced runners can go longer.
Thunderfoot Take
Pair it with a New Braunfels weekend and you’ve got another classic Thunderfoot formula:
Run somewhere.
Do something afterward.
Don’t make the race parking lot the most interesting place you visit all weekend.
Halloween Morning: Pick Your Costume and Your Distance
October 31 falls on a Saturday in 2026.
Texas race organizers noticed.
This is where the calendar gets weird.
In a good way.
Monster Mash Run — Houston
Date: Saturday, October 31, 2026
Location: Karbach Brewing Co., Houston
Distances: 5K, 10K and kids/family 1K
Thunderfoot Pick: Best Houston Halloween race
The Monster Mash Run is scheduled for Halloween morning at Karbach Brewing Co. and includes 5K, 10K and kids/family events. Costumes are very much part of the atmosphere.
Why We’d Run It
You already own the costume.
You might as well make it aerodynamic.
For Houston runners who want a fun race rather than a serious season goal, this checks a lot of boxes.
Thunderfoot Take
Do not attempt a 10K personal record while wearing an inflatable dinosaur costume.
Or do.
Thunderfoot Sports accepts no responsibility for what happens next.
Chupacabra Trail Run — Waco
Date: Saturday, October 31, 2026
Location: Cameron Park, Waco
Distances: 5K and 15K trail runs
Thunderfoot Pick: Best Halloween trail race
Halloween.
Cameron Park.
A trail race named after the Chupacabra.
The marketing department can take the rest of the day off.
The Chupacabra Trail Run takes place October 31 at Cameron Park’s Redwood Shelter and offers 5K and 15K trail distances.
Why We’d Run It
Some runners want costumes and pavement.
Some want dirt and questionable creatures of Texas folklore.
We know our audience.
Thunderfoot Take
The 5K makes it approachable.
The 15K gives experienced trail runners enough distance to make the morning interesting.
And if you hear something moving in the woods?
Probably a squirrel.
Probably.
Bonus Halloween Endurance Pick: Harvest Trail Running Festival
Date: Saturday, October 31, 2026
Location: Farmersville
Distances: 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, 50K and 10K ruck
If Halloween candy sounds like insufficient suffering, there’s always a 50K.
The Harvest Trail Running Festival runs along the Chaparral Trail around Farmersville and offers distances from 5K through 50K, plus a 10K ruck. The organizer lists the 2026 event for October 31.
Thunderfoot Take
North Texas trail runners looking for a late-season endurance goal should have this one on the radar.
Everyone else can finish their 5K and go eat Reese’s Cups.
Both lifestyles are valid.
Which October Texas Race Should You Choose?
Don’t select a race just because the date works.
Pick the experience you want.
Want a destination weekend?
Go Fredericksburg.
Want a Houston-area half marathon?
Look at Sugar Land or the Houston Half.
Want North Houston?
Run 10 for Texas.
Want Hill Country trails?
Look at Inks Lake or South Texas Ultra.
Want something completely different?
Run an airport runway in Laredo or the shoreline in Galveston.
Want Halloween fun?
Monster Mash, Spooky Sprint or Chupacabra.
Want to run 50K on Halloween?
You already know who you are.
Don’t Assume October Means Cool Weather
This is still Texas.
Do not build your race strategy around the theory that the word October automatically means cool temperatures.
Check the forecast as race day approaches.
Train through the conditions you’re realistically likely to encounter.
Pay attention to hydration.
And if race morning ends up beautifully cool?
Enjoy your gift from the universe and try not to mention it too loudly.
Texas weather can hear confidence.
Use the Texas Race Finder
These races are only a sample of what’s happening around Texas in October.
The Thunderfoot Sports Texas Race Finder is built for the bigger job: choose your dates, location and race type, then search the race calendar instead of digging through dozens of individual race websites.
Looking for:
A 5K close to home?
Filter for it.
A Halloween race?
Search the October calendar.
A trail race worth making a weekend out of?
Start with the map.
Something within driving distance next weekend?
That’s exactly what the tool is there for.
The goal isn’t to find the biggest race in Texas.
It’s to find the right race for your weekend.
Because the best race is usually the one that gets you registered, gets you training and gives you a reason to get outside.
Life Is Better Outside.
