Longhorn Traditions
Hook ’em, fight songs and what first-time fans should know.
Hook ’em Horns
Extend your index finger and pinky, folding your middle and ring fingers under your thumb — the head and horns of a longhorn. UT traces it to head cheerleader Harley Clark at a 1955 pep rally before the TCU game.
Texas Fight
“Texas Fight, Texas Fight”
The official fight song, played after touchdowns and other spirit moments.
The Eyes of Texas
The university’s school song, sung before and after Texas Athletics events.
Smokey the Cannon
Smokey fires after Longhorn scores — one of the loudest DKR traditions, and it catches first-timers by surprise.
Bevo & Big Bertha
Bevo is the live longhorn mascot; Big Bertha, one of the world’s largest drums, rolls with the Longhorn Band.
The Tower glows orange
After a Longhorns win, look west: the UT Tower is lit burnt orange.
2026 DKR Home Schedule
Every 2026 home game at DKR. Times are Central; SEC games marked “TBA” get exact times closer to the game. Always confirm on TexasLonghorns.com.
Watching away games?
Texas beat Tennessee in Knoxville and fell to Oklahoma 24–27 in the Red River Rivalry, then plays at Missouri (Nov. 7), LSU (Nov. 14) and Texas A&M (Fri., Nov. 27). Find watch parties in the College Gameday Finder.
Where to Stay
Staying close to campus or downtown makes the whole weekend easier — walk, rideshare or take short trips instead of fighting I-35. Big SEC weekends and Austin festivals push rates up fast, so book early.
