Texas College Football This Weekend: SMU Early Friday, Texas Tech Late Saturday

At 5:40 on a Friday in Dallas, twenty minutes until kickoff can mean twenty minutes of football anticipation or twenty minutes of wondering which way to walk after the ride drops you off. At 7:40 Saturday night in Lubbock, the same kind of decision comes with a different consequence. There is a pregame show on the schedule and the football is still fifty minutes away. The two Texas home games share a network and a weekend. The useful clock for each one begins somewhere entirely different.

On Friday, Nov. 6, Virginia Tech visits SMU at 6 p.m. Central on ESPN at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. On Saturday, Nov. 7, West Virginia visits Texas Tech at 8:30 p.m. Central on ESPN at Galaxy Stadium. Between those home dates, Texas A&M plays at South Carolina at 2 p.m. Central Saturday, also on ESPN. Start with the Texas Gameday Finder if you are deciding which game to see, and keep the Texas Stadium Guides handy once you have picked a destination.

Friday at SMU: let kickoff dictate the afternoon

The easiest version of a Friday campus game begins before everybody leaves work. Put the ticket in the appropriate phone wallet, send the actual meeting pin to the people arriving separately, and decide which side of the stadium you will approach. Make the meeting point a place you can identify while standing there. A photo of a landmark or a specific entrance does more work than a text saying “we’re right outside.” If you are coming with someone who needs step-free access, check the entire route from drop-off to seating while you still have time to change plans. The closest spot on a map can involve a longer walk once barriers and the right entrance are taken into account.

The SMU game center links to the school’s current game information. Use the school page for the gate, ticket and parking instructions specific to this date. Decide who will hold tickets for anyone who does not have their own phone and transfer separate tickets before your group separates. For dinner, a reservation after the game can be easier to keep than an appointment across town an hour before kickoff. If the youngest person in the group needs to eat first, pick something close to the approach you already chose.

For a first visit, the Ford Stadium Gameday Guide has the seating and campus context that the kickoff listing cannot give you. The same goes for the Galaxy Stadium Gameday Guide in Lubbock. Use those maps to orient yourself and take this weekend’s kickoff and event-specific instructions from the schools’ current announcements. A permanent stadium map and a Friday or Saturday operations notice answer different questions. It helps to have both open when you are picking a gate or deciding who should drive.

The matchup deserves an on-time arrival. Both teams entered the week 6–2, and SMU had the better conference record by half a game, 4–2 to Virginia Tech’s 3–2. The ACC preview points to the Hokies’ disruptive defense and the Mustangs’ explosive offense. From the stands, you can watch the space between those strengths. How much time does the quarterback have before a route breaks? Does a back stay in to help pick up pressure? On third down, does the throw need to travel to the sticks, or can a receiver catch it shorter with room to run?

If you only watch one early sequence, take the first SMU possession that starts with a modest gain on first down. Second and manageable gives the play caller choices. Second and long tends to expose what an offense trusts against pressure. Watch the edges of the formation before the snap. An apparent rush can drop away and open a throwing window somewhere else. That little switch tells you much more than the box score’s bare count of completions.

Saturday afternoon on the couch, then Saturday night in Lubbock

The SEC broadcast announcement puts Texas A&M at South Carolina at 2 p.m. Central. That gives viewers at home a clean middle game between the Friday and Saturday night windows. For fans with a Lubbock ticket, use halftime as a cue to take care of dinner or charge the phone. If you want the events outside Galaxy Stadium, the school schedule starts earlier than the TV schedule.

Texas Tech’s official gameday guide lists Raider Alley opening at 4:30 p.m., the Raider Walk at 6 p.m., a 6:30 p.m. Casey Donahew concert, general gates at 7 p.m. and the pregame drone show with band fanfare at 8:15 p.m. The school also lists a second drone show at the third-quarter break. If someone in your group has their heart set on the first one, make the goal “in our seats at eight” and work backward from there. Keep the phone ticket ready, look up the bag policy and choose the gate you will actually use. Bring layers suited to the evening forecast and check stadium rules before carrying anything extra.

The official parking map describes paid, free and accessible options, plus shuttle details and the event-day closure on Wes Kittley Drive of Champions. Pick a parking location based on the exit you need as well as the gate you want. The seemingly obvious turn nearest the stadium may be the one you cannot make once the traffic plan takes effect. If your group splits up after the game, make the return meeting point clear before the crowd comes out. A spot on the far side of an intersection can mean a long wait for whoever stayed behind.

West Virginia is 5–3 overall and 2–3 in Big 12 play coming in. Texas Tech is 7–1 and 4–1 in the league, and the Texas Tech preview notes a chance to extend its home winning streak to 14. With kickoff at 8:30, ask who can keep a drive on schedule when the night gets long. A second-half possession that forces several third downs can reveal more about a defense’s ability to get off the field than a single long scoring play. Watch whether the visitors can make the home crowd quiet enough to communicate on the next snap.

Two groups, two different plans

For the Dallas group that wants football and dinner, make the first shared appointment a stadium-side meeting, with everybody clear on how they get through the gate. Decide where to eat after you know whether everyone is staying to the end. For the Lubbock group that wants the whole stadium experience, make the first shared appointment earlier and choose where you are willing to split. A person headed for the concert and a person bringing a child who needs a quieter arrival can still share a section. They only need compatible tickets and a meeting point after entry.

If you are watching from home, check that your setup carries the network before Friday evening, then give the two home games their own stretches of attention. SMU’s early possessions are the test of how it answers pressure. Texas Tech’s late possessions are the test of whether West Virginia can make Lubbock uncomfortable after the crowd settles in. Saturday afternoon offers its own road-game question for the Aggies. The calendar says three football games. The useful way to follow it is to give each game one thing you want to see unfold.
