Texas fall has a timing problem.
The calendar says September. The thermometer occasionally still says July. Somebody has already put pumpkins on the porch anyway.
That doesn’t mean you need to wait for perfect sweater weather before making weekend plans.
From German festivals that can take over an entire town to pumpkin farms, historic downtown celebrations, the State Fair and a Renaissance village where carrying a sword somehow looks more normal than carrying a phone, Texas has plenty happening between September and November.
The bigger question is which events are actually worth getting in the truck for.
A neighborhood pumpkin patch can be a perfectly good Saturday. But if you’re driving two or three hours, the destination needs enough going on to justify the windshield time.
Here are some of the best Texas fall festivals and Oktoberfests worth building a day trip or weekend around in 2026.

Addison Oktoberfest — Addison
September 17–20, 2026
North Texas doesn’t exactly ease into Oktoberfest season.
Addison Oktoberfest takes over Addison Circle Park for four days with German food, music, entertainment, biergartens, vendors and festival games.
And because apparently ordinary athletic competition wasn’t enough, the weekend also traditionally makes room for stein-holding contests and dachshunds.
That’s difficult to argue with.
The festival runs Thursday and Friday evenings, continues through a full Saturday and wraps up Sunday afternoon.
Why It’s Worth the Drive
Addison is a good choice when you want Oktoberfest to be the main event rather than something you wander through for an hour before looking for something else to do.
The size of the celebration makes it easy to spend several hours there, and Addison’s location in the Dallas-Fort Worth area means restaurants, hotels and other entertainment are nearby if you’re turning the festival into an overnight trip.
If the adults in your group plan to enjoy the beer side of Oktoberfest, staying nearby or arranging a rideshare also makes the logistics considerably easier.

Best for DFW groups who want a large Oktoberfest experience without having to turn it into a cross-state road trip.
McKinney Oktoberfest — Historic Downtown McKinney
September 25–27, 2026
McKinney has one major advantage over plenty of festivals before you even get to the German food.
The setting is already good.
McKinney Oktoberfest spreads through the historic downtown square, which means restaurants, shops, wineries and other downtown businesses become part of the weekend instead of the festival sitting by itself in a giant parking lot.
Admission to the festival is free.
Why It’s Worth the Drive
Walkability.
Being able to park once and explore a downtown district changes the feel of a festival trip.
You can spend time at Oktoberfest, grab dinner somewhere else, walk through the shops and keep exploring without repeatedly getting back in the truck.
That’s exactly the kind of destination Thunderfoot likes because the festival doesn’t have to carry the entire weekend by itself.

One of the strongest North Texas choices for couples or groups who want Oktoberfest plus an actual downtown weekend.
State Fair of Texas — Dallas
September 25–October 18, 2026
There are more unusual Texas fall festivals.
There are smaller ones.
There are certainly cheaper ways to spend a Saturday.
But there’s still only one State Fair of Texas.
The 2026 State Fair runs for 24 days at Fair Park in Dallas.
You can make the day about rides, food, livestock, exhibits, live entertainment or simply discovering how many additional foods Texas can deep-fry before somebody finally intervenes.
Because the fair is enormous, this isn’t the place to arrive without a plan.
Why It’s Worth the Drive
Scale.
If you’ve never been, the State Fair belongs on the Texas list at least once.
Visitors coming from outside Dallas should also look at public transportation options. DART’s Green Line serves Fair Park and can save you from making parking and post-fair traffic the most memorable parts of the day.

Don’t try to see everything.
Pick the attractions that matter most to your group, leave room for something ridiculous to eat and accept that you’re probably not covering the entire State Fair in one visit.
That’s okay.
P-6 Farms Fall Fest — Montgomery
September 26–November 8, 2026
Calling P-6 Farms a pumpkin patch doesn’t really explain what has happened to the modern Texas fall farm.
Yes, there are pumpkins.
There are also dozens of attractions, a corn maze, farm animals, pig races, seasonal photo areas, rides, food and plenty of ways for children to make sure you’re not heading home after 30 minutes.
P-6 Farms sits near Montgomery, making it particularly convenient for Conroe, The Woodlands, North Houston and parts of College Station.
Why It’s Worth the Drive
For Houston-area families, this is close enough to work as an easy Saturday outing but substantial enough to feel like an actual destination.
You aren’t driving an hour just to photograph a pumpkin and buy an apple cider.
There’s enough happening to build most of the day around the farm.

One of the better fall choices for families around North Houston and Montgomery County.
If the kids want activities and the adults would like the outing to last longer than 47 minutes, P-6 makes sense.
Fredericksburg Oktoberfest — Fredericksburg
October 2–4, 2026
This is where Oktoberfest becomes a road trip.
Fredericksburg’s Oktoberfest takes over Marktplatz for three days of German music, food, drinks, games and traditional festival activities.
But the real advantage here isn’t simply the festival.
It’s Fredericksburg.
Make a Weekend of It
Instead of driving home as soon as the last accordion stops, you can build the weekend around downtown Fredericksburg, Hill Country restaurants, wineries, breweries and nearby outdoor destinations.
Want to put a little Thunderfoot into Oktoberfest weekend?
The Oktoberfest Kraut Run 5K and 8K is scheduled for Saturday morning, October 3.
Race first.
Pretzel later.
We don’t make the rules.
Outdoor-minded visitors can also work nearby destinations such as Enchanted Rock into the trip, although reservations and current park conditions should always be checked before going.

Fredericksburg gives you something many festivals can’t:
A destination that would still be worth visiting if the festival disappeared.
Oktoberfest simply gives you another reason to go.

If you’re going to devote a full weekend to one Oktoberfest on this list, Fredericksburg would be our choice.
Chappell Hill Scarecrow Music Festival — Chappell Hill
October 10–11, 2026
You don’t need 70 acres of carnival rides to create a good fall festival.
Sometimes a historic Texas town, live music, vendors and a country drive are enough.
The Chappell Hill Scarecrow Music Festival takes place in downtown Chappell Hill with two days of Texas country music and more than 100 vendors.
This one has an entirely different personality from the State Fair or Texas Renaissance Festival.
That’s a feature.
Why It’s Worth the Drive
From Houston, Chappell Hill makes an easy fall road trip.
You can explore the festival, spend some time around town and combine the day with nearby Brenham and Washington County.
It’s especially appealing for people who like fall events but would rather not spend six hours navigating carnival rides and massive crowds.

Choose Chappell Hill when you want small-town Texas fall instead of mega-festival Texas fall.
Texas Renaissance Festival — Todd Mission
October 10–November 29, 2026
At some point, every Texan living within reasonable driving distance of Todd Mission should probably experience the Texas Renaissance Festival.
Whether you return every year afterward is between you and your willingness to own clothing with a cape.
The 2026 season runs Saturdays and Sundays from October 10 through November 29, plus Thanksgiving Friday.
Festival hours run from morning through evening, making this an event you should treat as a full-day outing.
Plan the Day
The Texas Renaissance Festival isn’t something we’d squeeze between brunch and an afternoon errand.
Between performances, themed entertainment, vendors, food, costumes and the sheer size of the property, the experience works considerably better when you’re not staring at the clock.
The long season is another advantage.
Unlike a traditional two-day town festival, you’ve got multiple weekends to choose from.
Why It’s Worth the Drive
There really isn’t another Texas fall outing quite like it.
For Houston, The Woodlands, Conroe and the surrounding area, it’s almost cheating that something this large sits this close to home.

Trying to rush through the Texas Renaissance Festival largely defeats the point.
Dewberry Farm Fall Festival — Brookshire
September 12–November 8, 2026
Dewberry Farm is another example of why “pumpkin patch” doesn’t really cover it anymore.
The Brookshire attraction combines pumpkins and traditional fall activities with a large corn maze, rides, food, photo opportunities and dozens of attractions.
Later in the season, Halloween-oriented nighttime programming adds another dimension to the farm.
Why It’s Worth the Drive
Dewberry is particularly convenient for Katy, Fulshear, West Houston and nearby communities.
Like P-6 Farms, it works because there’s enough happening to justify making a day of it rather than treating it as a quick photo stop.
P-6 or Dewberry?
This one is largely geographic.
If you’re around Conroe, The Woodlands or North Houston, P-6 Farms is the more logical drive.
If you’re around Katy, Fulshear or West Houston, Dewberry Farm makes considerably more sense.
If you’re somewhere in the middle?
Then congratulations. You get to argue about pumpkins.

Wurstfest — New Braunfels
November 6–15, 2026
Just when most Texas Oktoberfests have packed away the accordion, New Braunfels decides ten days sounds more reasonable.
Wurstfest runs November 6–15 along the Comal River with German-Texan food, live music, carnival rides and Alpine and Bavarian-style entertainment.
The 2026 entertainment schedule includes more than 40 bands performing across five stages.
This is not a tiny Oktoberfest imitation.
Wurstfest has become its own Texas tradition.
Make a Weekend of It
New Braunfels is another location where spending the night makes more sense than racing back home.
You’ve got the Comal River area, Gruene, restaurants, breweries and plenty of Hill Country destinations nearby.
November also changes the feel of the trip.
You’re more likely to get the cooler-weather version of Central Texas than you are during the September festivals.
No guarantees, of course.
