Lake Conroe Golf Weekend: Where to Play and How to Build the Trip

Thunderfoot Sports Golf Desk

Lake Conroe has enough golf courses around it to create a weekend.

That does not mean you should try to play all of them.

The better plan is to pick the kind of trip you actually want first.

If the lake matters as much as the golf, build the weekend around The Golf Club at Margaritaville Lake Resort. If value matters, make Panorama Golf Club part of the plan. And if the golf itself is supposed to be the highlight of the weekend, make the extra drive to High Meadow Ranch.

Three courses.

Three fairly different reasons to play them.

That is considerably more useful than pretending every Lake Conroe golf weekend needs 54 holes, four restaurants and a Sunday-afternoon drive home where nobody can straighten his back.

Quick Verdict

Best Lake-Conroe Experience: The Golf Club at Margaritaville Lake Resort

Best Value: Panorama Golf Club

Best Pure Golf Round: High Meadow Ranch Golf Club

Best Two-Round Weekend: Margaritaville + Panorama

Best Golf-First Weekend: High Meadow Ranch + Panorama

Best for Couples or Families: Stay at Margaritaville and play one round

Best for a Golf Group: Two early rounds, lake time Saturday afternoon, dinner around Lake Conroe

Golf Desk Advice: Book the golf before you build the rest of the weekend. A beautiful hotel reservation does not help much if the only Saturday tee time left is 2:50 p.m. in August.

The Course That Makes the Weekend Feel Like Lake Conroe: Margaritaville

If the article title says Lake Conroe golf weekend, this is the course that makes the most literal sense.

The Golf Club at Margaritaville Lake Resort sits at the resort in Montgomery and is open to the public. The par-71 layout stretches to 6,921 yards and was redesigned by Jeffrey D. Blume in 2007.

The course features a tighter, more demanding front nine with doglegs, bunkers and water, followed by a back nine with more risk-reward decisions and forced carries.

That sounds like resort golf.

It does not necessarily play like easy resort golf.

For the recreational player, the important part is that 6,921 yards is the ceiling, not an assignment.

Pick a tee that keeps your approaches reasonable.

You came to Lake Conroe for a golf weekend.

You did not come to discover how many hybrids you can hit into par 4s.

What It Costs

Current published pricing is relatively straightforward.

Tuesday through Thursday morning golf is listed at $55, with afternoon golf at $45.

Friday through Sunday and holidays are currently $75.

Tee times can generally be booked no more than seven days in advance.

For a resort course on the lake, that weekend number is pretty reasonable.

Especially when a lot of newer public golf around Houston has become very comfortable asking for $100-plus on Saturday morning.

Practice and Before the Round

The course has a full practice range and putting green, with lessons available through PGA professionals.

The resort also offers club rentals, golf carts and a full-service pro shop.

The dress code is traditional: collared or mock golf shirts for men, no denim on the course and no swimwear.

Each player needs his or her own set of clubs, and outside coolers and beverages are not permitted.

That last one is worth remembering before somebody loads a cooler into the trunk and carries it halfway to the first tee.

Golf Desk Take

Best use: Saturday morning if you are staying on or near the lake.

The golf is good enough to justify the round, but the bigger advantage is what happens when you finish.

You are already at Lake Conroe.

That matters.

Panorama Golf Club: The Smart Sunday Round

Panorama is the course I like most for the second day.

Not because Sunday golf should be worse.

Because the economics make sense.

Panorama has three nine-hole courses — Winged Foot, Thunderbird and Rolling Hills — which are combined into different 18-hole rotations.

That gives the club more variety than a standard 18-hole layout and makes it particularly useful for repeat local play.

For a visitor, it also gives you a very different feel from Margaritaville.

The lake resort course is part of a destination.

Panorama feels more like you showed up because you actually wanted to play golf.

What It Costs

Panorama’s published core rate is currently $64 on weekdays and $74 on weekends, including tax.

Twilight after 2 p.m. is $48 during the week and $50 on weekends.

The club uses dynamic pricing, so live tee-time prices may differ from those core rates.

That is exactly why I would look here for a Sunday round.

A weekend golf trip can become expensive quietly.

Hotel.

Dinner.

Two rounds.

Range balls.

The snack at the turn that somehow costs as much as lunch did ten years ago.

Panorama gives you a legitimate second round without making the entire weekend feel like a financial decision.

How Hard Is It?

The three nines have different ratings and slopes, and the white-tee yardages generally come in around the low 3,000s per nine.

Depending on which two nines you play, most recreational golfers can build an 18-hole distance that is considerably more manageable than automatically playing 6,800–7,000 yards.

There are enough trees, penalty areas and residential boundaries to reward keeping the golf ball somewhere near the intended property.

That is generally a useful golf strategy.

Panorama’s published pace-of-play expectation is four hours.

After the Round

The Greenbrier Grill is on property and serves breakfast on Saturday, plus lunch and dinner during much of the week.

For Sunday, that makes Panorama particularly convenient.

Play.

Eat.

Leave.

No committee meeting required.

Golf Desk Take

Best use: Sunday morning or the value round of a two-course trip.

Margaritaville gives you the lake.

Panorama gives you a strong reason to play another 18 before heading home.

High Meadow Ranch: The Round You Build the Golf Trip Around

High Meadow Ranch is not directly on Lake Conroe.

That is precisely why I would not automatically put it into every Lake Conroe weekend.

If the group wants a lake weekend where golf happens to be part of it, stay closer to the water.

If the group says, “We are going up there mainly to play golf,” now High Meadow belongs in the conversation.

The Magnolia course was designed by David Ogrin and Tim Nugent and is unusual because the 18 holes are divided into three six-hole loops.

The property uses native pines, oaks, hardwoods and natural ravines rather than trying to manufacture all of its character with ponds and housing.

This is the course I would choose if the quality of the golf matters more than staying five minutes from the lake.

The Price Changes the Decision

High Meadow’s 2026 rack rate is $89 Monday through Thursday and $115 Friday through Sunday, plus tax.

Twilight is $70 on weekdays and $80 Friday through Sunday.

Regular 18-hole rates include the green fee and cart, and tee times open seven days in advance.

That is meaningfully more than Panorama.

And $40 more than the current weekend rate at Margaritaville.

So the question becomes:

Is the golf itself worth paying for?

For a group specifically coming to play golf, yes.

For a family trip where somebody is squeezing in one round before everybody heads to the lake, probably not necessary.

High Meadow also has a useful tee-selection philosophy that matches tee boxes to driving distance and handicap.

I strongly approve of a golf course publicly telling people that playing too far back is not a personality trait.

Golf Desk Take

Best use: Friday afternoon on the way into the area, or the main Saturday round for a golf-first trip.

This is the splurge.

Treat it like one.

So Which Two Courses Should You Play?

For most people, I would not make this complicated.

Best Lake Weekend

Saturday: Margaritaville
Sunday: Panorama

You get the Lake Conroe experience on Saturday and a strong value round Sunday.

Best Golf Weekend

Saturday: High Meadow Ranch
Sunday: Panorama

This puts the strongest pure golf experience first while keeping the second round reasonably priced.

Best Couples or Family Trip

One Round: Margaritaville

Then spend the rest of the weekend around the lake or resort.

The golfer gets golf.

Everybody else still gets a vacation.

Best Three-Round Golf Group

Friday: High Meadow Ranch
Saturday: Margaritaville
Sunday: Panorama

Only do this if everybody involved actually wants to play 54 holes.

Do not let one enthusiastic member of the group create an endurance event for everyone else.

Where Should You Stay?

There are two ways to approach this.

You Want the Lake to Be Part of the Trip

Stay at or near Lake Conroe.

The obvious golf-specific choice is Margaritaville Lake Resort, because you can combine the golf course with lodging, lake access and other activities without turning Saturday into a transportation problem.

The resort has tower suites and waterfront cottages, along with lake and recreation amenities.

Depending on availability, activities can include:

  • Boat rentals
  • Kayaking
  • Paddleboarding
  • Pickleball
  • Tennis
  • Mini golf
  • Pools and water recreation
  • Golf practice facilities

That setup is especially useful if not everybody in the group plays golf.

The golfer gets a tee time.

Everybody else still has a weekend.

Remember to compare the full resort cost rather than only the advertised room rate, including applicable resort fees and taxes.

You Are Here Mainly for Golf

Then I would not overpay just to sleep beside the water.

Stay somewhere convenient to Montgomery, Conroe or Highway 105 and put the savings into the rounds.

That is less romantic.

It may also finance most of your Sunday tee time.

What Should Saturday Look Like?

If the tee time is at Margaritaville, I would build the day like this.

Early Morning

Breakfast and range time.

8:00–9:30 a.m.

Tee off before Texas turns the golf cart seat into cookware.

Early Afternoon

Finish the round, eat and get off your feet.

Late Afternoon

Lake time.

Pool time.

Boat rental.

Or absolutely nothing.

Evening

Dinner overlooking the lake or a brewery stop elsewhere around Conroe.

Golf first.

Beer second.

Everybody gets home safely.

That order remains undefeated.

The Texas Heat Problem

A Lake Conroe golf weekend in October is one thing.

August is another.

Summer golf should be built around the earliest tee time you can reasonably get.

Not because morning golf is spiritually superior.

Because starting at 1:20 p.m. because the rate was $18 cheaper can become a fairly poor bargain by the back nine.

Hydrate before the first tee.

Use sunscreen.

Wear breathable clothes.

Use whatever shade the course gives you.

And if you want twilight golf, remember that discounted late tee times may not guarantee completion of all 18 holes.

The goal of a golf weekend is to play golf.

Not become a case study in Texas heat.

What I Would Book First

The order matters.

1. Saturday Tee Time

This is the hardest piece to replace.

2. Lodging

Especially if you are staying at the resort or bringing several people.

3. Sunday Tee Time

Panorama generally opens non-member booking closer to the date than some of the other courses, so know each course’s booking window.

4. Dinner and Everything Else

A restaurant is easier to replace than a 7:40 a.m. foursome.

How Many Rounds Is Too Many?

Three rounds in three days sounds fantastic when somebody proposes it in the group text.

By Sunday afternoon, opinions may vary.

For most recreational golfers, I think two rounds is the sweet spot.

You still get a golf trip.

You also get enough time to enjoy Lake Conroe.

If all four people are committed golfers and the weekend exists specifically to play, add the Friday round.

Otherwise, Saturday and Sunday are plenty.

Remember that the objective is not to return to work Monday physically irritated by the concept of standing.

Golf Desk Ideal Lake Conroe Golf Weekend

Here is the version I would recommend to the broadest group of recreational golfers.

Friday

Drive up after work.

Check in near Lake Conroe.

Eat.

Do not schedule an emergency nine-hole round just because everyone brought clubs.

Saturday

Play The Golf Club at Margaritaville Lake Resort early.

Spend the afternoon around the lake.

Have dinner nearby.

Sunday

Play Panorama Golf Club in the morning.

Eat after the round.

Head home.

That’s it.

Two different golf experiences.

Enough lake time to justify calling it a Lake Conroe weekend.

And nobody spends the entire trip racing from one tee sheet to another.

Golf Desk Take

The best Lake Conroe golf weekend is not necessarily the one with the best individual golf course.

That’s what makes this trip different.

If I were ranking the golf alone, High Meadow Ranch would be the course I’d most want to build a serious golf day around.

But if somebody asked me which course belongs in a Lake Conroe weekend, I’d start with Margaritaville.

The reason is simple.

You finish the 18th hole and you’re still on vacation.

The lake is there.

The resort is there.

The rest of the group has something to do.

Then play Panorama Sunday because it gives you another full round without turning the weekend budget into a greens-fee spreadsheet.

That’s the combination.

Margaritaville Saturday. Panorama Sunday.

Add High Meadow when the golf matters more than the lake.

Skip the third round when it doesn’t.

A good golf weekend should leave you wanting to book another one.

Not wondering why you played 54 holes in 36 hours.
