Pirates are taking over Todd Mission this weekend, but returning Texas Renaissance Festival visitors will notice one important difference from earlier seasons. The October 24–25 theme is Pirate Adventure, and the overall festival remains open. Wyrmwood Public House, however, will not reopen for the rest of the 2026 season following an August fire, according to reporting published Tuesday. The decision affects visitors who had planned on that specific venue, and it is a useful reminder that even a familiar annual festival can change between visits.

The basic festival appointment has not changed. The Texas Renaissance Festival advertises weekend hours of 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with no entry after 7 p.m. Its ticket schedule places Pirate Adventure immediately after the opening Oktoberfest and 1001 Dreams weekends. You can still plan a full day of performers, shops, food and people watching. You simply shouldn’t copy an old itinerary and assume every stop still exists.

What the venue closure actually means

The Houston Chronicle reported October 20 that Wyrmwood Public House’s operators chose not to rush its rebuilding after a fire on August 31. No injuries were reported. The Chronicle says work continued for weeks, but the venue is now targeting a return in 2027 rather than during the current festival season. That is a particularly important distinction for anyone who bought a separate experience tied to the venue or expected to meet friends there.

The report also says ticket holders for its special performances should look for information about exchanges or refunds, and that performers from Wyrmwood’s Green Hour still have festival activity. That does not mean every old program has moved to a new stage at the same time. Check the current lineup directly and use the operator’s stated process for a ticket issue rather than relying on an old social-media schedule.

A loss like this can be disappointing without defining the entire festival. Repeat visitors may be attached to one room, one performer or a particular atmosphere. If your group normally uses Wyrmwood as a meeting point, choose a different, unmistakable landmark before setting out. A simple change to the plan will save a lot of confusion.

Pirate Adventure is more than a costume theme

The festival explicitly labels October 24 and 25 as Pirate Adventure. Some guests will build elaborate costumes around the weekend, while others will come in ordinary clothes and enjoy the spectacle. Both approaches belong. Nobody has to purchase a costume to participate in the spirit of a fair, and a visitor wearing comfortable shoes with a simple accessory may have a better day than someone fighting a complicated outfit for eight hours.

If you do dress up, look at current rules about prop weapons and prohibited items. An accessory that looks harmless at home may not meet event-entry rules. Weather and walking surfaces matter as much as appearance. Think about how a large hat, long coat or stiff boots will feel after hours of queues and crowds. Costumes are fun until they make the rest of the day hard to enjoy.

The pirate theme also gives parents an easy way to engage children without buying everything they see. Ask them to choose a favorite character, look for music they haven’t heard before, or take part in one suitable performance or interactive attraction. The story of the day can come from exploring the grounds rather than shopping.

Make one performance the anchor

The official festival entertainment page lists an extensive roster of music and theatrical acts. Use that as the starting point, then confirm the actual daily schedule when you arrive. A good strategy is to choose one performance nobody in the group wants to miss, one meal break and plenty of unstructured time between them. It is the unplanned conversations and street performances that often become the memory everyone talks about afterward.

Trying to do every scheduled event is a good way to spend a long day walking rapidly past the best parts. If different people have different interests, allow a safe, agreed short separation rather than insisting everyone attend the same show. Establish a meeting point and decide who is responsible for children. Large public festivals are easier when a group makes these decisions before phones start ringing in the middle of a crowd.

A fair can be entertaining even when you don’t recognize a single performer. Listen for instruments or styles that surprise you. Watch how a comedy act handles the audience. Take note of the craft and work behind an elaborate costume. An event with a fantasy setting can still reward genuine curiosity.

Saturday and Sunday are not identical purchases

The official ticket page lists prices by themed weekend and day, with multiple types and variable ranges. Saturday and Sunday of Pirate Adventure are not advertised at the same universal price. The simplest advice is to select your exact date and ticket category in the festival’s own checkout before announcing a group budget. Taxes and optional add-ons can make a screenshot of an advertised price misleading.

The main ticket doesn’t necessarily cover every extra purchase or specialized experience on the grounds. Decide in advance whether the group cares most about food, performances, souvenirs or something else. A memorable day does not require buying multiple costumes and every specialty item. Give younger visitors a spending limit or an opportunity to choose one keepsake that actually matters to them.

If a guest needs accommodations, check official accessibility resources before arriving. A site-wide event can have variable terrain, and assumptions about how far you will need to walk can create unnecessary frustration. A prepared day is a more inclusive day.

The drive and the final hour count

The festival grounds are at 21778 FM 1774 in Todd Mission, northwestern Greater Houston. That’s not a downtown Houston destination. Travel times can look deceptively short on a map before event traffic or parking queues are considered. Choose an arrival window with flexibility, especially if coming from the Woodlands, Conroe or the Houston metro during a popular themed weekend.

Departure matters too. The official closing time is 8 p.m., but staying until the last moment isn’t necessarily the best choice for families with young children or visitors facing a long drive. An early exit can preserve an otherwise wonderful day. If you need to meet friends after the event, agree on a location outside the busiest pedestrian area rather than standing at an exit hoping everyone will find each other.

Bring water and dress for the actual forecast. A dry October day can still be warm in the afternoon and cooler after sunset. A festival isn’t improved by having someone exhausted or dehydrated halfway through the plan. Make rest part of the itinerary instead of a failure to complete it.

What this year says about returning traditions

Part of the appeal of the Texas Renaissance Festival is that it becomes a yearly tradition. People return for familiar food, shows and shared jokes. But returning with no flexibility sets everyone up for disappointment when anything changes. Wyrmwood’s closure is substantial for visitors who loved it. It is also an opportunity to discover a new favorite performance or meet a different artisan this season.

For a family trying the festival for the first time, the venue’s history may not shape the day at all. Start with what is open and what your group enjoys. For longtime attendees, acknowledge the loss without letting it swallow the rest of the experience. That’s a more satisfying way to approach an event that will continue to evolve.

The useful links

Pirate Adventure is scheduled for October 24–25, 2026. The festival advertises 9 a.m.–8 p.m. operating hours and last admission at 7 p.m. Check the official ticket page for current pricing and the entertainment schedule for performances. The Houston Chronicle’s October 20 report details Wyrmwood’s closure. If you’re planning other activities in the surrounding area, explore Thunderfoot’s Lake Conroe & North Houston hub.

There is still a festival to enjoy. Dress comfortably, pick one or two things you care about, confirm any special-ticket changes and make room for the unexpected. A good Pirate Adventure doesn’t depend on finding every stop from last year’s map.
